  1. Used to form nouns describing abstract qualities from adjectives, corresponding to English suffixes such as -ness and -ity.
    adere (quick)aderves (quickness)

Notes

When the suffix is applied:

  • to class I adjectives, a lengthened version of the final a, i.e. ā, occurs between the suffix and the root.
  • to class II adjectives, no vowel occurs between the suffix and the root.
  • to class III adjectives, the final i remains between the suffix and the root.
