Appendix:High Valyrian kinship terminology

High Valyrian uses the Iroquois kinship system, in which paternal uncles are equated to the father and maternal aunts to the mother, with their children being equated to siblings. In other words, parallel cousins use the same terms as siblings, and cross cousins use separate terms, derived from the word for the relevant aunt or uncle. Furthermore, terms for nieces and nephews depend on the gender (sex) of the referent, in relation to gender of the relevant sibling, by the same logic. Terms for brothers and sisters (and thus, parallel cousins) as well as paternal aunts and maternal uncles depend on their age relative to that of the referent or of the relevant parent, respectively. There are four unique terms for grandparents, while terms for grandchildren are simpler, comprising only "grandson" and "granddaughter", as in English.
