Notes

Certain question words in Irathient can distinguish between animate and inanimate referents, where English usually makes no such distinction. For “how”, the most accurate translation of tha nazǝ would be “with what?”, whereas the translation of tha hazǝ would be “with whom?” The same distinction applies to gyi nazǝ (why?, literally “for what?”) vs. gyi hazǝ (why?, literally “for whom?”), and panazǝ (whose?, literally “of what?”) vs. pahazǝ (whose?, literally “of whom?”).
