Fjerdan

Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Fjerdan *smen (cheese) + *hɨla (diminutive, modern -le) + *ullo (man) + *ord (man) + *hɨla (diminutive, modern -le).

Historically, the pastry was called smilla ulle (butter man) (where smilla is the diminutive of smen (cheese) and ulle an archaic word for "man" that means "chief" in modern Fjerdan). This eroded and dissimilated to smüller, obscuring its meaning, so ölle (the diminutive of ord (man)) was added. Thus, the literal meaning of the modern word is "little-cheese-man-little-man".
