Fjerdan is a language created by David J. Peterson and Christian Thalmann for the Netflix series Shadow and Bone, based on the Grisha Trilogy of books by Leigh Bardugo. It is spoken in Fjerda, a northern nation inspired by Scandinavia. The original corpus of individual words by Bardugo in the books drew heavily from Swedish and German, at least in terms of how they were spelled in the Latin alphabet, but also contained a priori elements in the longer phrases. Bardugo's own pronunciations, however, often diverged from the expected source language pronunciation, and her pronunciation rather than that of the source language was used by Thalmann and Peterson as a basis when fleshing out the language a priori.
