Source Spelling

Frikdreina

Pronunciation

IPA(key): /ˈfɹikdɹenə/

Rhymes: -ikdɹenə, -enə

Noun

frikdreina

  1. (derogatory) mutant (specifically a person who had mutated due to radiation in a way deemed unacceptable by the majority of Grounder society)

Creation and Usage Notes

Jason Rothenberg asked me to come up with a word for Grounders who had mutated in August of 2016. He initially suggested it be a general word for "outcast", and I came up with a few ideas: leftou, ausenon, ausada, auseda, and auskaba. None of those landed for him. He mentioned that the reason they were cast out is because they were a drain on resources, and that gave me some more ideas: skabdreina, skabdraga, and friksoka. I'm honestly not sure what the last one was supposed to be. I was trying to come up with something different, because it helps when you need to eliminate selections. Jason e-mailed back, "How bout Frikdreina?" It seemed to work if instead of it being an object + nominalized verb compound, it was an adjective + nominalized verb compound—and rather than it being a Trigedasleng word dreina (i.e. drinker) it came from English "drainer" (i.e. from the drain on resources idea). So I let him know that was fine, and that's how the word was created.
