Appendix:Talisa's Letter

From The Languages of David J. Peterson
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This letter appeared in The Bear and the Maiden Fair, episode 7 of season 3 of Game of Thrones. The original English was written by Cat Taylor, and the High Valyrian by David J. Peterson. In-show, it was written by Talisa Maegyr, a Volantene noble, married to Rob Stark, King in the North, to her mother in Volantis. The text is notable for being one of the longer texts in High Valyrian, and being one of the few examples of non-dialogue writing in the language from Game of Thrones. It appeared in the show and Peterson's blog as follows (barring ñōghossi, which incorrectly appeared as ñoghossi, without a macron, which has been added):

Muñus jorrāeliarzus: Olvie hen embraro tolmiot nykēlot avy ivestragon issa. Nykēlo syt ūndon daor luo valzȳro ñōghossi ōressiks. Dārys issa vestris, se prūmio ñuho konir drējior issa. In English:

Dearest mother: So much news I have to give you from over the seas. I find myself held by the arms of a husband I never expected to have. They say he is a king and of my heart that is true. He holds us safe, for now I am two, with his child beneath the heart that beats for him. The war rages on, but soon, when it is all over, we shall come to you and celebrate together.
